When we return from a trip, we like to bring some souvenirs back, whether it be pictures taken, a memento for someone special, or something we like and bring back to experience again or share.
This small island was first discovered, and those who populated it surrendered to its natural charms; here they built their dwellings - today known as Little houses of Santana - small triangular houses with thatched roofs... and later, the magnificent properties Quintas that welcomed noble families in search of Madeira's "open air cures", surrounded by gardens of subtropical vegetation and scents of exotic fruits.
Those who visit Madeira know that gastronomy alone is reason enough for a trip, but the natural wonders of the island's geography fill all the other senses.
A toast with a glass of Poncha, some snacks on the table such as barnacles, Bolo do Caco with garlic butter or a slice of honey cake (always hand cut!) is one of those moments that are a “must do” experience.
The foreign families that settled here appreciated very much the richness of Madeira's embroidery: beautiful designs embroidered on the noblest fabrics decorate bed linens, tablecloths, handkerchiefs and clothing.
The orders arrive to several countries and Madeira's embroidery is today an internationally famous heritage; internationally famous is also the Madeira wine, which has travelled through History, sailing the seas on the Discoveries routes and has marked historical moments, being still today very appreciated all over the World.
At the end of the visit we count: three honey cakes, a bottle of Poncha, two bottles of Madeira wine, a set of embroidered Madeira towels and napkins for a special occasion, and half a dozen miniature Santana houses to stick on our best friends’ refrigerators.
Here are some suggestions for those who visit us - small souvenirs to remember and share moments and experiences from our cities. We look forward to your return!
